They moved into the house the following morning. Delaney had spent the previous day cleaning the place while Griff met with men from town and many of the miners. She wasn’t pleased with him leaving all the work to her. She hoped she made her displeasure known by keeping quiet during their meals and in the evening. She’d started out the night as far from him as possible in the bed, but during the night she migrated toward him and woke with his arms around her.
The sheets, plates with food, and the mattress had been carried, by Griff, into the coffin shop. There was a bench there which they’d use to collect and store any evidence they found.
The mattress from the bed they slept in at the hotel was now on the bed in the house. Griff had negotiated with Delf for the use of it until one could be shipped to town. At least that’s what Griff told the man. When they solved the case and were ready to leave Tuckertown, the mattress would go back to the hotel with no order for a new one being placed.
Griff was taking the wagon and horses back to the livery. Delaney had made him put his own clothing and other things away. There was no way she was going to do it for him. She was a Pinkerton Agent just like he was. She might not have the experience he had, but she wasn’t going to be treated like a servant.
Since they hadn’t gone to the mercantile or the butcher, she wasn’t going to prepare a meal. They’d eat supper at one of the other eating establishments in town. With the town population being mostly male, there were several places to eat as well as the saloons which also served food.
Delaney sat at the kitchen table sorting the papers the sheriff had given them. She had a notebook and pencil where she was dividing the information in the papers into categories. She was about half way through her first perusal of the notes when Griff came in.
“I spoke with several people, trying to get acquainted. Hopefully, it will lead to some sort of friendship so I can begin learning what the townsfolk think about the deaths.”
“We need to organize this information,” she said. “It’s a mass of individual notes on each death in no particular order. I’ve started doing so, but it will take both of us going over it several times to get it into a useable set for evidence.”
Griff sat down and Delaney handed him her notebook. He took his time reading it. She looked over more of the notes Asa had supplied.
“You’ve organized this well. I’m surprised.”
“Why?” Delaney eyed him.
“Well, you’re a…”
“Don’t say it’s because I’m a woman. I studied in the sciences. I’m used to working with information and organizing it into something understandable.”
Griff cleared his throat. “Um, I mean… I didn’t realize you’d be so good at so many things. You can cook, and you cleaned up this place very well.
